Occupational Therapist

DES occupational therapists conduct evaluations and assessments, and work with other members of the school-based team (including parents) to help children to fulfill their role as students by supporting their academic achievement and promoting positive behaviors necessary for learning. By working with the students’ team, they are able to provide the collaborative environment needed to achieve optimal success. DES occupational therapists help determine what is needed for a student to receive a free, appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment through thorough and defensible assessments which addresses the physical, cognitive, psychosocial and sensory components of performance. Our occupational therapy professionals focus on academics, play and leisure, social participation, self-care skills (ADLs or Activities of Daily Living), and transition/work skills.

School Psychologist

DES school psychologists work tirelessly to ensure thorough, defensible psychoeducational evaluations are conducted as we understand that they are an integral component in the special education process. Our DES school psychologists utilize technology (PowerPoint) and “non-jargon” language to deliver the assessment results to the IEP team in a manner that is clear, understandable and applicable to the students’ needs. It is our goal that the entire IEP team will walk away from the IEP meeting with a deep understanding of the unique needs of the student and what supports are necessary to help their students educational progress.

SN and PT

School Nurse

DES school nurses are key members in the special education process as they help ensure that students’ medical/health needs are identified in consideration of transitions, special factors, present level of academic and functional performance, annual goals, benchmark/short-term objectives, and any other pertinent areas. They assist the team in understanding written medical reports and the possible educational impacts of the student’s health condition.

Speech Therapist

DES physical therapists collaborate with other specialized instructional support personnel and families to build student achievement in all domains that affect academic success and wellness. We strive to address the whole student and focus on his/her strengths in order to ensure their ability to access their educational environment throughout the school day.
